Why Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Weren’t Picked For White-ball Series vs South Africa

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed why Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were not picked for the white-ball leg of the South Africa tour. India will be playing 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs, and 2 Tests on their tour to South Africa, starting next month. 

BCCI on Thursday (30th November) announced the Indian squad for all three formats for the South Africa tour. The governing body provided opportunities to quite a few youngsters in all three formats. But what caught the attention of many was the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the white-ball squad. 

It raised many speculations as to why the two pioneers of the game aren’t in the squad. However, the reason behind that has finally been revealed. BCCI provided the official statement related to the absence from the squad, stating that the duo asked for rest from the white-ball leg. 

Releasing the official statement, BCCI stated: “Mr Rohit Sharma and Mr Virat Kohli had requested the Board for a break from the white-ball leg of the tour.” 

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli however will be seen in action during the Test series. They last played for India in the ICC World Cup 2023. The duo gave their best but couldn’t win their team the cup. While Sharma scored 597 runs, Kohli ended the tournament as the leading run-getter with 765 runs to his name.

Apart from revealing the news about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, BCCI also provided a statement on Mohammed Shami, who also has not been named in the squads for T20Is and ODIs. The governing body revealed that the pacer is undergoing medical treatment. 

“Mr Mohd. Shami is currently undergoing medical treatment and his availability is subject to fitness,” BCCI stated
