Team India will reportedly be without their star batsman Virat Kohli for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The highly-anticipated tournament is scheduled to be played in the Caribbeans and United States in June 2024.
The latest development has also all but brought an end to Virat Kohli’s glorious career in T20Is. The former India skipper has not played a T20I for Team India since the semifinal loss against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Along with him, Rohit Sharma has not played a T20I either but the latter is set to lead the team in the marquee event.
As per reports, the BCCI officials, head coach Rahul Dravid, and the selectors are happy with the performance of youngsters such as Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal and do not want Virat Kohli in the T20I side anymore. According to Abhishek Tripathi of Dainik Jagran, Rohit Sharma will be leading Team India in the next T20 World Cup but there would be no place in the team for Virat Kohli.
“Rohit will be the captain in the T20 World Cup but there is no place for Virat. This was discussed in the BCCI meeting held in Delhi yesterday in the presence of the five selectors, head coach Rahul Dravid, and three BCCI officials. With the arrival of Shubman Gill and Yashashvi Jaiswal, Virat is not getting a place. BCCI officials will talk to Virat in this matter,” wrote Tripathi on X.
Writing further, he stated that Rohit Sharma wanted to be confirmed as the captain during the meeting on Thursday (November 30) and the officials and the selectors decided to retain him as the leader.
“Rohit wanted that if he has to be made the captain in the T20 World Cup, then it should be decided now. BCCI has decided that Rohit Sharma will be the captain in the T20 World Cup,” wrote Tripathi.

The latest snub will bring a disappointing end to Virat Kohli’s illustrious T20I career. He was the highest run-scorer in two of the last four T20 World Cups and was the second highest run-scorer in one of the editions. In the last edition, the star batsman had scored 296 runs in 6 games at an average of almost 100.
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma rested for white-ball series in South Africa:
The BCCI, on Thursday, confirmed that both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will miss the upcoming T20I and ODI series against South Africa after requesting for a break. Both the senior batters will be a part of the Test series. India are scheduled to play three T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests in South Africa from this month. The tour will get underway with the first T20I on December 10 in Durban.
